So I'm interested in hearing what other people are hearing so I've got a challenge for you all! You get to list your favorite bands, BUT you are limited to only 3 bands. I know a lot of us could list bands from here until the end of time, but we're going to limit this at 3 to keep us all sane.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones:
If you've never heard of ska, or if you have and have never listened to 3rd wave, this is the definitive band to listen to within that genre.

Rancid:
If you're familiar with punk rock then you have most likely heard of Rancid or their predecessor band Operation Ivy. With such well done lyrics and excellent bass lines, thanks to Matt Freeman, in addition to Tim Armstrong (a hold over from Operation Ivy) this band is one of the best, especially as far as the punk rock genre is concerned.

Iron Maiden:
If you've not heard of Iron Maiden, I'm sorry that you live under a rock. Steve Harris, voted the best metal bassist several times over, helps guide this band with Bruce Dickinson on lead vocals leading to soul shattering performances and holding numerous records and awards, really I shouldn't even have to talk about how awesome Iron Maiden is, their work speaks volumes more than I can ever speak.

So, what about you?

I'm actually kind of weird because it's hard for me to choose a bunch of favorite bands or musicians that I can call my "favorite." Usually for me I'll like a song or two from one artist, but that's it. XD I'll completely be like UGH with all their other songs.

Also your fav music groups just seems to match you perfectly! xD; I might check out your first one because I like some ska music. I'm a bit picky though. p:

I lol'd.

*ahem* Anways...

Here's my favorites I guess. XD!

The Postal Service: I randomly stumbled upon this music group when someone from work let me listen to one of their songs from their mp3 player. I instantly was like, "Holy cow this is amazing. o.o I've never heard of anything like this..." He told me it was from The Postal Service, and instantly I had to go find more of their music! It was like love at first sound! Their songs were just so upbeat and AMAZINGGG. Ahhhh. They've been my absolute favorite for quite a few years now.

Vampire Weekend: I found a lot of their songs on my Pandora station! I love the sound and the lyrics are always pretty interesting. I don't love /all/ of their songs, but I find most of their music to be great, which is a rarity with me haha.

Globus: Stumbled upon them on youtube somehow. They're part of a new genre called "Epic Rock," which to me seems like orchestral/theatrical music with a more rock feel. I love their music because it's very empowering and emotional, and I'm generally very driven to choir and orchestra.

Ah, Vampire Weekend, nice touch. It's been a while since I've listened to them. I can't even remember if they've released a new album of late... If you enjoy bands in that area I could recommend a few. I normally don't listen a lot of indie/indie rock stuff (says I listening to The Strokes right now lol) but have you ever heard of Broken Social Scene? Give them a try, Shoreline would be the song I'ld recommend.

I always knew you'd be the type to listen to this type of music, lol.

As for me, I don't have particular favourites, and preferences are always changing by how I feel. At the moment, my favourite bands are:

Opeth
Most bloody definitely one of my favourite bands. They're a death/black/progressive/folk/jazz/exotic/ambient style of metal/rock band - one cannot begin to describe their unique, dissonant sound.
Their music is substantially an acquired taste though (although that's fairly obvious from my previous sentence Razz); a little too heavy for prog rock lovers and a little too soft for death metal lovers.
What makes this band so amazing is not simply because of the sheer stylistic variety that is glued together with rock and metal sounds, but their ability to be "progressive" or different yet still being able to express raw emotions while still showing technical brilliance - dominantly in the texture, dynamics, and pitch areas of music.

All band members, due to their Swedish background, have a strong connection to jazz, folk, and all forms of metal. This is fairly evident in their music as many of their pieces go from acoustic, fingerpicked folk passages with very jazzy vocals to heavily distorted, dissonant metal passages using several compound time signatures, variety of time changes with a good balance between melody and rhythm, death metal vocals (although I've heard quite a few death metal bands, I have to say Opeth's growls are just exponentially more expressive, aggressive, articulate; emotional) and always accompanied by very jazzy basslines (they're also very funk influenced) and drumbeats. But, they also have a lot of purely folk, jazz, and progressive rock pieces in on every album (Damnation is also a 100% progressive rock album).

Red Sparowes
These guys are a post-rock/post-metal/ambient/experimental band. They're basically the epitome of my ventures into post-rock. Their music is 100% instrumental and all of their albums are concept albums accompanied by long song titles that act as a basic storyline to aid listeners in their perception of their music. If you don't know what post-rock/post-metal
and ambient are, I suggest you wiki them and listen to the song Alone and Unaware, the Landscape was Transformed in Front of Our Eyes by the respective band.

Blue Scholars
I'll think of something to say about these guys later.
